Reporting to the Department Managers, you will oversee and direct the activities of the 39+ employees on our (growing) second shift. We already have strong processes in place and a culture built by a long-tenured team, so your first goal will be to come in and learn how we do things, become part of the team, and keep everything running according to process. Once you’ve had time to integrate and get to know how we do things here, there will be room for you to make suggestions for process improvement. At the end of the day, you will be responsible for managing second shift operations to ensure the team is providing a quality product, on time and within budget.

Day-to-day, you’ll answer to the Department Managers for process instructions, and then work with the teams to ensure those processes run smoothly. Most of your time will be spent with the employees, confirming they’re on task and acting as an escalation point to help with any problems they may have, and tracking production numbers throughout the shift. You’ll also communicate to the other shift supervisors and managers with shift reports to ensure everyone is on the same page. You’ll know you’re succeeding in the role if you’re able to keep the processes moving while maintaining employee morale, and if you build strong relationships with the rest of the supervisory and management team.

Some of your specific tasks will be to:
  • Direct and oversee all operations of responsibility to ensure acceptable levels of quality and performance.
  • Ensure proper training is provided to employees on all processes and equipment.
  • Lead large scale projects throughout the lab for the purposes of improving process flow and throughput.
  • Analyze problems that arise and determine actions that will minimize the problems, decrease costs and/or improve yields; recommend changes and, upon approval, implement those changes.
  • Maintain department budget including labor and equipment costs.
  • Ensure proper communication and coaching of employees is completed on a consistent basis according to company policy.
  • Maintain performance records on all employees, communicate performance levels to each employee routinely, and coach employees on methods and techniques for improving performance.
  • Assist in analyzing and recommending the purchase of new equipment for the lab as needed.
  • Ensure that all safety standards are maintained in the work area.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.
